FAQs

How is carbon emission from diesel generators compared with that from grid electricity supply?

In 2020, the carbon emission from electricity supplied via HK Electric's power grid is up to 60% lower than that from electricity generated by diesel generators. As HK Electric is progressively phasing out coal-fired generation units and switching to highly efficient gas-fired combined-cycle technology, use of grid electricity supply can reduce much more carbon emission.

In general, how long does it take to arrange for temporary power supply from application to actual provision?

The lead time required depends on the need and complexity of excavation work required for cable laying. In general, it will take around 3 to 6 months. Customers are highly recommended to contact HK Electric (hotline 2510 2701 or email SPCS@hkelectric.com) as early as possible (e.g. when planning for submission to the Buildings Department) to discuss the temporary supply arrangement.

What factors should be considered when evaluating if a temporary power supply is sufficient for the entire construction life cycle?

- Peak power demand throughout the construction life cycle derived from the major electric construction equipment (e.g. tower cranes) to be used in different construction phases and their power rating.

- Tentative commencement and closing date of temporary power supply.

- Account ownership of the temporary power supply and arrangements for sharing out the electricity expenses among the developer and contractors.

Which tariff plan is applicable to the temporary power supply for construction sites?

Construction site may opt for Non-Residential Tariff or Maximum Demand Tariff (Please refer to the Useful Information for details). Based on the estimated electricity consumption pattern, HK Electric will help customers evaluate which tariff plan is more favourable for their construction site operation.

Can the temporary power arrangement for construction sites earns credit points for green building certification of BEAM-Plus?

According to the assessment under the BEAM Plus New Buildings, measures to reduce site emissions can earn credits under the Integrated Design and Construction Management – Green Construction Practices. For details, please refer to the BEAM Plus New Buildings.

How is temporary power supply arranged?

For typical power demands of 3-phase 400 A or below, HK Electric will provide construction sites with stable and reliable electricity supplies via low-voltage cables and weatherproof enclosures to replace temporary diesel generators. A maximum of two low-voltage cable supply points each of 3-phase can be arranged according to customer's need (i.e. a total capacity of 3-phase 800 A).

For power demands above 3-phase 800 A, HK Electric will provide construction sites with stable and reliable electricity supplies via pre-fabricated modular transformer pillars to replace temporary diesel generators.
