To cultivate employee relations and ensure effective communication, we have established various internal communication channels.

Joint Consultation Committee (JC)
The Joint Consultation (JC) Committee is an established mode of communication between the management and the employees. JC members are elected by their fellow colleagues for a 2-year term. All 70+ members are divided into six panels. They relay employees' needs and requests to the management and also help to explain and convey company issues and policies to their constituents. Quarterly meetings are chaired by a Director or a General Manager and with members of the Human Resources Division joining to take follow-up actions.

Trade Union
The Company communicates with the Trade Union in both written and verbal manner to exchange ideas. Meetings with union members are conducted whenever required, and our Senior Manager (Employee Relations) is the key point of contact.

Other Channels
Our corporate intranet contains regular company and employee news, upcoming events,  "IDEAS Click"  (an on-line suggestion box), departmental information and employee hotlines.

We also have canteen focus groups, regular employee relations visits and focus group meetings at employees' workplaces as well as theme talks or topical briefing sessions on company issues.

Care for Our Employees

Caring is one of our core values and employee wellness is our prime concern. The Employee Wellness Programme offers a wide range of work-life balance activities and plans, such as:

  • Physical exercise
  • Interest groups
  • Family day
  • Eco-tours
  • Fruits distribution
  • Volunteering work

Our 24-hour counselling hotline service, manned by professional counsellors, is provided for employees and their family members.

We arrange flu vaccination for employees, medical check-ups, health seminars or talks and fitness courses and post health and fitness tips on our corporate intranet. Employees also have access to recreational facilities such as holiday houses, gyms, snooker, karaoke, and table tennis and badminton courts, etc.

HK Electric's Health and Safety Board oversees our health and safety policy and issues. It is chaired by our Managing Director or his delegate and comprises members of the senior management team. The HK Electric Influenza Pandemic Prevention Committee establishes various measures to prevent epidemics such as avian influenza, swine influenza or COVID-19. The Safety and Training Sections of major divisions are also dedicated to promoting the day-to-day health and safety of employees.

Care for Our Community

In our continuous efforts to promote the awareness of Corporate Social Responsibility among our employees, we encourage them to make use of their individual skills and know-how to contribute to the community. Our volunteer team, comprising more than 1,000 employees, is regularly engaged in community services, including visiting the single elderly, and organising activities for children from under-privileged families. We also work with NGOs on community initiatives to create work opportunities for the less fortunate. These include encouraging employees to buy "fair trade" products or products from social enterprises and arranging talks for NGOs to promote their services. We also participate in different types of environmental protection activities, charitable fund-raising campaigns, and support blood donation. We hope to synergise our strengths and resources to care for the community.

Awards & Recognition

Taking part in internal and external competitions is an effective way to gauge our standards and is also a source of motivation for continuous improvement. We encourage our employees to build on their strengths and take part in quality-related, safety, environmental, social, and sports competitions. Our internal recognition programmes range from outstanding employees' award schemes and sports competitions to health and safety quizzes. At our annual "Best of the Best Awards Presentation Ceremony", we recognise and reward our employees' with outstanding performance and contributions. As a family-friendly employer, we also award the children of our employees for their outstanding academic performance and achievements from extra-curricular and sports activities.
