With no age limit to learning, even young children are encouraged to know more about the ways and means to decarbonise the city. HK Electric has recently produced an activity book entitled "Decarbonisation ABC" for distribution to more than 50,000 kindergarten and nursery students in the new academic year, appealing to them to take low carbon actions from an early age.
Jointly created with a renowned illustrator "all things bright and beautiful", the book is designed for children aged 3-8 and begins with a journey of Green Kid and her new friend, Smart Kid, which brings out the importance of decarbonisation and a sustainable future.
The book comes with a variety of activities, including matching and stickers games, spotting the differences, a board game and a glossary of vocabulary, all crafted to allow children to learn how to cut carbon in a fun way.
Speaking at a story-telling session to launch the book today (29 September 2022), HK Electric General Manager (Public Affairs), Ms. Mimi Yeung said that it is important to nurture children's environmental awareness at an early age and build green habits when they are small.
"Learning decarbonisation can be as simple as learning the ABC. We hope to make the concept easier to understand. With the guidance from teachers and parents, young children will be inspired on how they can contribute to the world's well-being by practising low carbon living," she remarked.
"We believe decarbonisation needs the support of people of all ages. We have earlier extended the 'Green Energy Dreams Come True' Competition to tertiary institutions and curated a new puppet show for the elderly. With the launch of this activity book now, we hope to reach out to kindergartens and engage young children as well," she said, adding that she was pleased with the positive response from the students today.
The event is supported by the founder of the Little Green Feet Reading Club, Mr. Kenny Or, who took the students through Green Kid's adventure of saving Mr. Earth by reducing carbon dioxide.
"Decarbonisation ABC is an activity book which combines story and interactive games. This is a good and motivating medium for young children to learn about ways to protect the environment," said Mr. Or.
To ensure the most effective use of the book, HK Electric will provide a guided video and arrange workshops for parents, teachers and the public. The company's Smart Power Gallery has also produced a kindergarten version of its virtual tour, introducing climate change and renewable energy in a simple and easy to understand way.
The Happy Green Campaign has been an anchor event under HK Electric's Education Fund. Through organising different activities throughout the year, it is aimed at promoting energy efficiency and conservation, renewable energy and a low carbon lifestyle to the public and now the younger generation.
Apart from the above new initiatives, the campaign also features a wide range of online and offline activities for its member schools.
