HK Electric has stepped up its promotion of the smart use of power and renewable energy by opening up a venue for the public to learn and experience everything first-hand.
The "Smart Power Gallery", located in Possession Street, Sheung Wan, is well-equipped with multimedia displays, interactive games and space for STEAM* workshops. Once HK Electric's pay-in centre, the new facility now showcases information about renewable energy, energy efficiency, climate change and Smart City, as well as the Company’s history and development.
Managing Director of HK Electric, Mr. Wan Chi-tin, took a group of students on a guided tour there earlier, sharing his smart energy tips while introducing the numerous displays there.
"We hope to make the displays interesting and easy to follow so that people of all age groups would be able to understand the importance of 'smart power' and be inspired to step up efforts to protect the environment, help combat climate change and join hands to transform Hong Kong into a low carbon Smart City," Mr. Wan said.
Mr. Wan also joined the senior students in a STEAM workshop to help make wind turbine models before trying out the various interactive games with the junior students. The young visitors all agreed that the visit had enhanced their understanding of renewable energy and what a Smart City really needed.
The "Smart Power Gallery" comprises five storeys with the ground floor theme highlighting "The Power behind Hong Kong" and introduces HK Electric's increasing use of gas for generating power to reduce carbon emissions. The history of the Company and other information about its power systems are also featured.
The first floor shows various types of renewable energy -- their strengths and limitations. There is also an interactive game for visitors to experience the basics of solar energy.
The second floor is dedicated to what constitutes a "Smart City". Some of the displays include "Internet of Things" sensors to monitor the safety of the elderly at home and smart living options such as online reservation for charging electric vehicles.
Also displayed on this floor are applications and products provided by different startup smart technology firms that are related to smart living. Visitors will be able to understand how various new technologies can be applied to business operations or in everyday life. These displays will be updated from time to time.
The third floor introduces the suite of four funds and three schemes under "Smart Power Services" provided by HK Electric. Different types of photovoltaic panels are also on display for customers to choose the solutions best suited to their needs and requirements.
The fourth floor is a venue for HK Electric to engage visitors in discussions and to hold gatherings or workshops.
